Recent History

For many years our Colorado Springs Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has supported the basic mission of AAUW, which is encouraging women to seek higher education, by giving scholarships to women attending local colleges and universities. However, by September 2007 both the money for Local Scholarships and the number of applicants had dwindled; no applications were received that year, and only two had been received the previous year despite bulletin board postings at many colleges and univer-sities in Colorado Springs and from Denver to Pueblo.

After consulting with Jennifer Fisher, a scholarship counselor in the Office of Financial Aid at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS), the new Local Scholarship Chair made changes in the scholarship application form and procedures that were approved by our Board: She reduced the length of the application from five pages to two; she recommended that our scholarship be offered only at UCCS and PPCC (Pike’s Peak Community College); she put the application form on-line at both schools; and she enlisted the help of Jennifer Fisher at UCCS and Cici Toner in the PPCC Financial Aid Office in getting the word of our scholarships out to women at their schools, including giving them hard copies of the application form.

With the help of many in our branch, she worked to increase the Local Scholarship Fund through book sales, sales of various things at branch meetings, “opportunity drawings” for donated items, and generous contributions by members, often in conjunction with their dues payments. In November 2010 funds generated at our Authors’ Day by book sales through Black Cat Books were given to the Local Scholarship Fund. In November 2011 that fund will benefit from an even bigger, better Authors’ Day event at the Garden of the Gods Club.

The results of these efforts have been very satisfying. In the spring of 2008 we received nine applications and awarded one $1000 and one $500 scholarship. In the spring of 2000 we re-ceived 19 applications and awarded one $1000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships. In the spring of 2010 we received 33 applications and awarded one $1000 and one $500 scholarship because just before the fall term began, one of the $500 winners accepted a full-tuition scholar-ship at another university. In the spring of 2010, after restricting applicants to those who had completed 36 college credit hours and requiring the official Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) form with Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) number to show financial need, we received 20 applications and awarded one $1000 and two $500 scholarships. In the spring of 2012 we again plan to award scholarships. Our recipients have been very worthy of and very grateful for the scholarship money they received.

2011-2012 Update

In the spring of 2012 we will be giving four $1000.00 scholarships and two $100.00 runner-up scholarships.
