CHRISTMAS IN COLORADO HISTORY
By Kathy Sturdevant

Although Americans have bemoaned the “commercialization of Christmas” for decades, the popular cultural customs, media (film, television, song, literature, and magazines), along with consumed goods (edible, wearable, and playable) of American Christmas have all taken their places in America’s seasonal sentimentality. Enjoy learning the origins and consider the social significance of American Christmas customs, through peace, crisis, and war, on the frontiers such as early Colorado, and with infusions of diverse cultures and beliefs, in this highly illustrated presentation.

Katherine Scott Sturdevant is Professor of History at Pikes Peak Community College. She has taught U.S. history—and the history of Colorado, the Pikes Peak Region, the West and Southwest, Native Americans, the environment, women, genealogy and the family—for about 25 years. She is the author of two books on researching, writing, and preserving family history and has received local, state, and national teaching awards. She is a contributing author for the Pikes Peak Library District’s Regional History Series, a frequent lecturer with the Pioneers Museum, a committed volunteer for the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, and an AAUW branch member.

ANCIENT EGYPT
By Richard Harwood
For millennia, Egypt has been a place of mystery and imagination.  The very name conjures up images of legendary kings, of mummies and pyramids, and of fabulous treasures.  Richard’s slide presentation will be about the Land of the Pharaohs, its fascinating past and its reflection in today’s cultures.  There will also be time to discuss the current political situation in Egypt.

Richard Harwood is the Associate Director of the University of Arizona Egyptian Expedition.  A graduate of Dartmouth College and the Duke University School of Law, Mr. Harwood spent his professional career in trust banking in Colorado Springs, specializing in estate planning and financial counseling.  He retired in 1995 to devote more time to archaeological excavation in Egypt.  He worked for several years in the Valley of the Kings and recently spent seven years excavating the memorial temple of a female pharaoh who ruled Egypt around 1200 BCE.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Author’s Day was a great success! Many thanks to Dixie Gordon, Margaret Baptist, Lindy Conter, Victoria Bartz, and Joann Oh for all the work that went into making it a wonderful event. Jeanne Breeding and Sydney Ryan donated beautiful art for the silent auction. Black Cat Books was on hand to sell books, with a percentage of every sale going to the local scholarship fund. The authors’ presentations were all quite interesting. The food and the view were magnificent—all in all, Dixie & Co. set a high standard for future events. I’m not certain yet of the exact numbers, but we did clear a very nice amount for local scholarships.

At the November board meeting, we voted to offer four $1000 scholarships for the 2012-13 school year. We also voted to update the Working Policies. Minutes of the Board meetings are available to any member—just call or e-mail the secretary.

On January 7, the board will meet to discuss our Strategic Plan. If you are interested in participating, let me know at PAULETAT@aol.com or 598-3020.

Also mark your calendar NOW for the International Women’s Day celebration on Thursday, March 8 at the Pioneers Museum. If you attended last year’s event, you know that it will be a great opportunity to connect with women’s organizations from across the community.

I wish all of you a joyous holiday season!
Pauleta

PUBLIC POLICY CORNER
By Cara Koch, Director of Public Policy

By the time you read this, Joann Oh and a team of AAUW Members will have attended the League of Women Voters’ meeting to introduce the League’s new research project on “The Role of the Federal government in Education.”  Joann will report to the Board her findings on how AAUW might help with the project.  Any AAUW member wanting to get involved can contact Cara for information.

Our other major thrust in the area of Public Policy is to recruit more advocates to help with our mission to advance equity for women and girls.  Supporting the effort to establish AAUW Student Organizations on two more local campuses (in addition to the one we already have at UCCS) is our “first step” in this direction. This is part of a nation-wide AAUW campaign to reach women on college campuses throughout the country.

Natalie Fouts is working with AAUW campus liaison/faculty member Phoebe Lohstroh at Colorado College, and Sandy Johannsen is approaching Pikes Peak Community College faculty/staff, to initiate AAUW Student Organizations on these campuses.  To find out how AAUW Student Oganizations benefits students, please click on http://www.aauw.org/member_center/programs/upload/CUpartners_PIAB.pdf

I recently observed the first “Smart Start” workshop about salary negotiation at UCCS, hosted by Dr. Aditi Mitra and her AAUW Student Organization.  Presented by certified trainers Brenda Wolfe and Amy Blackwell, it was exciting to see the students participate in an experiential program that research indicates is currently the most effect of its kind. The response of the students was so positive; I am convinced the other campuses will want AAUW Student Organizations on their campuses!.  Any AAUW member who is interested in getting involved with supporting AAUW Student Organizations can contact me.

Other exciting news is the Board’s decision to apply for a Community Action Grant that would provide major funding of a collaboration between Colorado Springs AAUW, State AAUW UCCS, Colorado College, and Pikes Peak Community College.  With submission/approval of this grant proposal, our Branch will sponsor a “Wiser Together Café:  A Multi-Generational Conversation Among Diverse Women in Colorado Springs” for 200 or more women.  Once the Student Organizations are established on all 3 campuses, we will submit the application.  This event will attract to AAUW new, diverse advocates for our mission; facilitate increased networking among various women’s groups; enhance multi-generational understanding of equity issues in our community; and demonstrate the leadership of AAUW.

Contact Cara at 531-6374 or cekochcs@comcast.net.

Message from Amy Blackwell

Thank you so much for the mug and Starbucks gift card! It was my extreme pleasure to speak to your members and prospective members on October 8th.  Please remember to call upon me if I may be of assistance in moving the AAUW missions forward.

Amy Blackwell
AAUW Director-at-Large & AAUW Colorado Public Policy Co-Director

Local Scholarships

Today I delivered hard copies of our Local Scholarship application form to Cici Toner, Financial Aid Advisor in Enrollment Services at PPCC, and to Danny Torres, Scholarship Counselor in Financial Aid Services at UCCS as well as to the Child/Family Development Centers at each school, where students drop their children off for care. I wish that each of you could have been with me to see the delighted reactions of Ms. Toner, Mr. Torres, and the students at the desks at the child care centers when I told them that this year we will be offering four $1000.00 scholarships and two $100.00 runner-up scholarships for students who were interviewed but were not winners. In this climate of reducing aid to students, we have substantially increased our scholarships, and I felt deep appreciation from the professional staff and the students.

I want to add my own gratitude to their appreciation and pass these feelings along to you. You contributed by buying opportunity tickets, by giving baskets to be drawn for, by simply giving money along with your dues, and, most recently, by supporting our very successful Authors’ Day, which was attended by 63 people and brought $1800.00 to the Local Scholarship Fund. I must give special credit and thanks to those who dared to spearhead this new fund-raising venture—Dixie Gordon, Victoria Bartz, Margaret Baptist, and Lindy Conter—and to two artists who contributed their impressive work for our silent auction—Jeannie Breeding, who gave a limited edition print of her lovely painting Southpark Pasture, and Sydney Ryan, who gave a beautiful bronze/crystal/gemstone necklace, bracelet and earrings. This first annual event at the Garden of the Gods Club was both stimulating and satisfying with four very different and individually fascinating authors: a modern life humorist, a deeply involved family memoirist, a psychologist of women’s spiritual journeys, and a Colorado historian.

Now Brenda Wolfe and Candy Crumb, who have brought us an entirely new kind of fund-raising through the King Sooper cards, have generously agreed to share some of the proceeds from these cards with the Local Scholarship Fund; the rest will be given to National AAUW programs.

The current version of our Local Scholarships application form can be obtained from our LS Application Form page or the PPCC and UCCS scholarship websites. The due date is March 31, 2012, but students might want to be working on their applications between semesters. Do spread the word!

Thanks to your many gifts in many forms, we as an organization are indeed making a difference to women in our community.

Joann Oh, Local Scholarship Chair

GREAT DECISIONS
WANTED: Individuals interested in discussing and broadening their understanding of international issues

Again this year, AAUW is sponsoring a Great Decisions Discussion Group which will examine some thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans today. The publication that accompanies Great Decisions provides background information, current data, and policy options for eight issues and serves as the focal text for a grass roots discussion group.
Beginning mid February, Great Decisions will examine: Middle East realignment, Democracy promotion, Mexico, Cybersecurity, Exit from Afghanistan & Iraq, State of the oceans, Indonesia and Energy geopolitics. Time and place is under consideration so what we need is to measure interest.

If you are interested please call Liz Wolf (590-8615) or email: jwolf66@msn.com or Meg Chojnacki (638-7321) or rmchojnacki@aol.com. Deadline for saving a place is 15 Dec. 2011 so that your publication can be preordered.
